Install Eclipse for Android development using Windows 7

Eclipse is an IDE (Integrated development environment), a visual way of organizing and debugging code using projects.

Eclipse does not know how to handle the Android SDK unless you also install an add-on afterwards, so the last step in this task will be making sure that this component is configured correctly.

Download Eclipse from this location:

Select the Eclipse IDE for Java Developers, with an identical version (32-bit or 64-bit) as the Java SDK you installed.

Optional development environments: You do not have to use Eclipse IDE, you can use NetBeans or no IDE at all by developing from the command line and an editor

Eclipse comes in a zip file that contains the ‘eclipse’ folder.

Eclipse does not have an installer like a usual Windows application so that you will not get a ‘c:program fileseclipse ide’ for example. Instead, eclipse will run right off the place where you unpack.

For simplicity, I always use a c:util folder where I place all applications that do not require installation.

I created a new folder called c:utileclipse

So here is a listing of what my eclipse folder looks like once I have unzipped the contents

C:utileclipse.eclipseproduct

Its total unpacked size is about 150Mb

You can create a shortcut for the eclipse.exe application as this will be the only file you need to invoke to execute Eclipse.

The first time it executes, Eclipse prompts for the workspace folder. This is a single folder where you can store your initial Android project

By default in Windows 7, this folder is at

you may modify this as required.

You may also leave the ‘Use this as the default and do not ask again’ unchecked for now. Once you start producing new projects or importing existing code you will become more familiarized with workspaces.

Next step is to download the SDK starter package
